As a Jew who has studied our Kabbalah which is pretty much well accepted and integrated into mainstream Judaism at this point, it seems that our conception of God has evolved that of the Catholics who taught you about a personal God in school, Alex. What you are arguing against is a personal God who cares about specific individuals, but the Kabbalistic, and in general Esoteric God of most religions is not so person. It is more like the unexplored mystery, the underlying cause of science, the logos, the first principle whatever you want to call it. Seems esoteric Christianity like Meister Eckhart is along the same vein. With that said, out of all the billions of quantum phenoma happening as i type this, sometimes, every rarely almost never, does this God choose to intervene. Those moments are what describe what I believe in a more enlightened Theism and Atheism. And I am not even talking about the parting of the red sea or the resurrection of Jesus. I am talking about the "divine revelation" that people like the prophets and Gospel writers, and even your mentor Hitchens got when creating their groundbreaking works that pushed our collective evolution forward. That there is a dimension we don't understand, an invisible hand so to speak, guiding us in ways we may never quite comprehend. I think that idea is beautiful and cool.

By Dinesh’s logic, the Bible would (should) continue to evolve as would our understanding of God if mankind continued to contribute to the text. Perhaps hot button issues like the biblical stance on homosexuality could be addressed this way: who/what we believe our creator to be is something that grows with our understanding of each other and the world around us. The Bible was written by people and people are hard pressed not to add their own biases.

Alex, as I listen to you and the bishop discuss terror management theory and materialism versus the intuition of great beauty and value, I see a place where these dovetail quite nicely. But I would disagree that evolution doesn't ultimately drive this process. Surely the civilizations that produced profound and unifying works were more successful that those which did not. These works inspire others towards a better union, as well as to risk death in ways that ultimately drive their societies forward. That temporary freedom from an ever-present and all-encompassing fear is as powerful as it is transcendent.

"Do you believe the highest duty of the government is to advance public welfare?" is not a question you can answer without asking qualifying questions about what the person means. Are they asking that the government should always prioritize the immediate impact on public welfare? Are they asking whether the government's pursuit of advancing public welfare would justify breaking the law and, for example, suspending elections, if it was deemed in the public interest? The scope of religious questions is even larger. So when people criticize JP for not answering with simple yes/no answers, they're not understanding that JP is trying to be precise so that the audience understands what he means, and that being precise on anything of awesome complexity like theology means going into extensive detail to agree on the premise of the question, before giving an answer.

JP doesn't give a "straight answer" because it is a complex question due to the concepts being asked about. Being clear on anything religious in a few words is impossible. Theology encompasses literally everything. You cannot clearly articulate your views on that in a few words, in a manner that diverse audiences will come away with the same understanding of what you said.
